Prague pre-wedding photographer's sunrise guide: Charles Bridge at its quietest

Ask any Prague pre-wedding photographer for the city's best-kept secret and the answer is the same: it empties out. Between roughly two hours before sunrise and 9 a.m., Charles Bridge and the Old Town Square belong to a handful of joggers and us. These are field notes on when to arrive, where to stand and how to keep couples warm and on schedule.

Charles Bridge: arrive 40 minutes before sunrise

Work backwards from the published sunrise time. In June the sun rises around 4:55, so we are on the bridge by 4:15; in October around 7:00, so 6:20 is fine. Stand on the Old Town side facing west: the first light comes from behind the castle, giving the bridge statues a rim of light against the sky. The cobblestones hold dew almost every morning and get slippery, so the bride scopes positions in flat shoes, and check a trailing gown is actually dry before it touches the stones.

Old Town Square: the pink sky comes first

Within twenty minutes of sunrise the twin spires of Tyn Church and the Astronomical Clock tower turn pink, and the square holds nothing but a cleaning truck and a few dog walkers. Cut in from Dlouha Street, shoot the church wide from the south-east corner, then move below the clock tower for a low angle. Be finished by 8:30 — after that the tour groups arrive in waves and every frame picks up a hundred strangers.

Outfits, warmth and permits

Morning temperature swings hard and the bridge is windy: from November to March bring a coat and hand warmers for the bride, and plan the outfit change at a cafe by the bridgehead — most open around seven. Handheld photography needs no permit in the centre, and tripods on the bridge at dawn draw no attention, but police at Prague Castle can move you off the steps, so don't argue. On the way back, Karlova Street and the baroque staircase with its carved statues stay quiet in the low morning light — a good closing spot for the second outfit.

If you want an empty Prague in your album, our Prague pre-wedding photography page covers routes and pricing, or simply get in touch to check dates — sunrise slots are limited, so we recommend booking at least two weeks ahead.
